The Girl Detective - Kelly Link
"The Girl Detective," the much celebrated short story by Kelly Link, first appeared in the now-defunct online magazine Event Horizon, and was later published in Link's first book, Stranger Things Happen (Small Beer Press). In "The Girl Detective," mysteries linger, waiting to be solved; the intrepid girl of the title ventures to the underworld, and back again. There are fortune cookies, and dancing. The story lingers like a puzzle in the reader's mind, begging to be taken apart, examined, and put back together. An enigmatic fusion of nostalgia, longing, suspense, and the magical charm of fairy tales, "The Girl Detective" remains one of the finest examples of Link's extraordinary work.
Link, along with her husband Gavin Grant, with whom she runs Small Beer Press, generously agreed to allow the Ninth Letter design team to reinterpret "The Girl Detective" as a video art piece. Our artists worked to capture through sound and visuals both the narrative pull and the otherworldly ambience of the original text.
