What's in a name? Our intention was not to find a universal definition for the five words listed above, but rather to indulge in their ambiguity, to expand the scope of their meanings and possible applications.
We asked each of these people, all with different professional practices, to respond to the same array of words, all of which are critical components of their various disciplinary vocabularies. Each word's meaning is influenced by context?the traditions and protocols inherent to a specific field of inquiry. Each person was approached separately, asked to write down some thoughts about the array of words, and was unaware of the responses of the other participants. All five people work in different academic departments at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This asynchronous interrogation has been reassembled here as five parallel voices in the act of naming.
