Art, Technology, and the New Media Movement
New Media has been described by some as a movement that embraces parallel tendencies in modern art and computing technology since World War II. Other authorities explain the discipline as encompassing any digital media production that is interactive and digitally distributed. Whatever your definition, maverick artists and radical scholars are flocking to the New Media arena as a space that welcomes and encourages fusions of disparate disciplines in pursuit of the new new thing. In her introduction for the seminal 2003 New Media Reader, Janet Murray muses; "Whether artists, theorists, or scholars, we are all engaged in foregrounding our cultural confusions, tuning up our sense of existential befuddlement before the scientifically revealed world of the twentieth century. The task is the same now as it ever has been, familiar, thrilling, unavoidable: we work with all our myriad talents to expand our media of expression to the full measure of our humanity." New Media is the new frontier, and it is all happening now.
